The Future of Food Production
avec Cécile Fourcade
Advances in biotechnology have taken this research beyond the usual contexts of science and medicine to facilitate the design of new utility objects and commodities, created from the cells of living organisms.
Presented is a collection of hybrid objects part mechanical, part organic in which the organic part is kept alive artificially and contained within a synthetic environment designed for the purpose. The relationship of consumer and ‘life-based product’ is made very direct in a new genre of domestic agriculture. The life-forms are abstracted and distanced from their more complete form and created for the purpose of sanitized, guiltless production and consumption. Organisms both vegetable and animal are nurtured by the owners existing as a hybrid relationship somewhere between a potted-plant, pet and product.
